It’s a little bit strange. Writing something like an instant messenger for the iPhone shouldn’t be so hard. Granted, I know nothing about programming, but come on, the SMS app screams iChat. Why then has the first version of the iPhone a certainly entertaining yet also infantile YouTube app, but no IM? Edge should be more than enough for that.

You could even combine texting and instant messaging into one sleek app. The same is the case for MMS. You could also integrate that with the Mail app. For both tasks you wouldn’t even have to clutter that beautiful homescreen with one or two more icons.

So why leave it out? Here’s my entirely speculative guess:

When it comes to MMS, leaving it out could be all about leaving legacies behind. That may sound a little bit strange when it comes to something as new as MMS, but in times of unlimited data plans sending MMS just seems frivolous. The technology Apple wants us to use is E-Mail. Considering that MMS is not as widely used as, say, SMS and that more and more mobile phones support E-Mails this seems logical. But since there is also – as it seems – no way to send pictures from one phone to another with Bluetooth or Wifi this is certainly an annoying limitation. However, if this is really about leaving legacies behing, Apple won’t change its approach.

If leaving MMS out is about legacies, leaving IM out is certainly not about legacies. Granted, IM could become the new standard when it comes to short text messages. You know, with data plans and all. But texting is so wildly used, leaving it out would maybe spark off riots. So texting had to be included. Why then no sleek, tightly integrated IM/SMS app? My best guess: a concession to AT&T. I guess that data plans could be a serious threat for all carriers. When you can use VoIP, IM and E-Mail on your mobile all you need is an unlimited data plan. That’s not what the carriers want. Rather create new standards (MMS) than using existing ones.

It could certainly also be that Apple was just too lazy and slow, and that both, IM and MMS will come soon. Or they just like annoying their customers, I don’t know.

We’ll find out. Maybe even prior to the launch in Europe. On the other hand, I’m just hoping for a cool new iPod. Even if it had just some of the iPhone’s features, I would rather buy the iPod than the iPhone. 60 $ per month is just too much for a poor student (that I will hopefully be around that time of the year). On the other hand, the iPhone just seems so darn cool.

Now the iPhone really is called “iPhone”. Not iPod Phone or something like that. Despite what was somehow predicted before and also sounded reasonably logical: iPhone was a overused name, to the point that it had become a cliché, the symbol for the infamous rumor sites, the descendent of the notorious “real Video iPod”.

Why then is Apple actually using this dull name? Well, everybody knows what an iPhone is, that’s for sure. The long-rumored mobile-phone thingy from the “iPod company”. Actually calling it iPod Phone is not really necessary, especially if the iPod part of the phone is just one third of the whole thing. This is not a phone-enabled iPod but rather a computer that manages – tries to manage – to be the trinity of being an iPod, a phone and a mobile internet device. Maybe Apple thinks calling it “just” iPod Phone would mislead customers. And then there’s the thing with the legitimation of the price. iPod with some phone stuff in it like “iPod phone” would suggest = 500$? No way. iPod+Phone+Internet = 500$? Hell, yes. Thus the need for the more function neutral “iPhone”. And the “iP” ensures that everybody knows that this thing is indeed coming from the “iPod company”.

What would have been the alternatives to both iPhone and iPod Phone? Looking at how they decided to name the former iTV, now Apple tv, shows us one. Because actually they are calling it tv. The Apple logo and the following lower case “tv” shows that there was some paradigm shift when it come to naming devices at Apple. And this paradigm shift even made its way to the iPhone: look at the iPhone page. The iPhone is not called iPhone, no! It’s called iPhone. See it? There is no Apple logo in front of the iPod, none in front of iMac or anything else at the Apple website. Just in front of Apple tv and the iPhone. Why then wouldn’t it have been more logical, if Apple thinks putting Apple in front of their products (or just their logo) is a good thing, to call the iPhone just phone? Maybe that was even discussed. That’s not a too bad name. It raises awareness that Apple is making the device. Not just the “iPod company”. Problem is, however, that any reference to the iPod is stripped in this name. I guess this might ultimately be the reason why the iPhone is the iPhone and not the Apple phone.

At least, if iPhone doesn’t work out they have a great alternative: the phone.

Endlich! Es packt wirklich jemand an, jemand der auch Einfluß haben wird. Und sei es nur, dass Microsoft das ganze dann in – wieviel? – naja, vielleicht 7 Jahren oder so liebevoll kopiert.

Wurde auch Zeit! Und wie Apple an die ganze Sache rangeht ist einfach fantastisch. Time Machine ist so ganz nach meinen Geschmack und Lösung – zumindest was die Software angeht – aller Backup-Probleme, die mir damals bei meinen Artikel auch eigenfallen sind. Cheap sowieso, weil eh im Betriebssystem drin, easy, so scheint’s, auch und good? Wir wollen’s doch hoffen.

Was jetzt nötig ist, ist Hardware, die da mit macht. Also am besten: zum einen leicht austauschbare Festplatten und zum zweiten mindestens zwei davon. Schade, dass es gerade da bei Apples Consumer-Produkten (Mac mini, iMac) eher schlecht aussieht. Wer früher keine Backups gemacht hat wird sich auch in der Zukunft keine externe Platte für Backups anschaffen. Und was ist überhaupt mit den Laptops?

Doch genug Pessimismus, der Ansatz ist genial, und selbst bei Backups auf ein und derselben Platte jetzt schon nützlich, zerschossene Dateien, verlorene Fotos, aus versehen überspeicherte Dokumente und so weiter würden damit schonmal aufhören ein Problem zu sein, und das ist doch schon was. Sehr viel, um genau zu sein.

Um die Stille zu brechen und langsam wieder zur Normalität zurückzukehren (nicht falsch verstehen, ich fand die paar nicht ganz so normalen Wochen ganz großartig): Heute kam auf arte ein Film (The Girl in the Café, der deutsche Titel ist wie fast alle deutschen übersetzten Titel seltsam dämlich und wird deshalb hier mit keinen Wort erwähnt) der einen an den Traum einer besseren Welt glauben lassen will. Der einen Mut machen will, dass auch wenn man nicht alles so genau weiß, auch wenn man meint nicht alles zu verstehen, auch wenn jedes Handeln so seltsam klein und unwichtig erscheint, dass es trotzdem nicht falsch ist dafür einzustehen, was man selbst für gut hält. Ohne immer auf Kompromisse zu bauen. Der Traum vom Guten im Menschen, und dem was damit möglich ist. Der Traum im Leben das zu tun, wovon man immer träumte, anstatt das, wozu einen die Umstände zu zwingen scheinen.

Der Film will und kann Trost geben, in Zeiten in denen man als Bewohner eines reichen Industriestaats jederzeit in Gefahr ist Verrat an seinen Ideen zu begehen, und zum Heuchler zu werden, nein, zum Heuchler wird: Oh, mein cooles neues Polo-Shirt von Puma wurde in Asien von Kindern für einen Hungerlohn hergestellt? Vielleicht denk ich ja mal dran, oder auch nicht.

Er will zeigen, dass es einen Weg gibt, den wir nur gehen müssen. Und dass das alles gar nicht so schrecklich kompliziert ist. Man darf nur die Idee und den Traum nicht vergessen, auch wenn man dann Gefahr läuft als Träumer schlecht dazustehen. Ist Träumen so schlimm?

Ich mag den dosierten Optimismus. Sowas ist eben auch nötig. Und wenn während des Abspanns dann noch gezeigt wird, dass es trotz Happy End im Film in der Realität eben noch Sachen gibt, die man anpacken muss, so ist das einfach genial.

Now, that the »WM« turned into an »EM« (don’t cry foul: without Brazil it won’t be less interesting, rather less boring) the time has come to focus on some continental stuff, and since Germany made it to the semi-finals I will focus on all the great German blogs.

First of all, there’s Fooligan. I know, I said something about their »boring« German style analysis, but I was wrong. Awful Awfully (Adverb, Adverb, Adverb! Man.) wrong. They are not boring at all, with an huge, high quality output. Reading there is always a joy. Maybe they started a little slow (thus my boring), but right now they are incredible.

Then there is allesaussersport, with its more »systematic« approach. Not quite as boring as this may sound with great international media overviews. For the bigger picture.

And there is more. I found a whole lot of great »smaller« stuff about the World Cup. World Cup in Germany plus blogs in Germany? It works. Started slow, but at least now it works and it’s fun.

PS, since it worked so well last time, I will do it again: Germany will beat Italia. 2-0 minimum.

Just gotta love it!

One reason why I’m somehow sad that the USA didn’t make it to the knock-out round may be these guys, US-Fans, who are in Germany (and Holland, and Switzerland) during the World Cup, making their videocast. And I really enjoyed their (lo-tech) videos so far. First of all (and that may explain my fascination for forgein blogs) because of the look at Germany from the outside (highly interesting and entertaining at the same time) and second because of their enthusiasm and optimism (yeah, ok, after the USA got kicked out, they were crushed, but you could really feel their pain, and that was also – great) and a total lack of any arrogance.

(Yeah, if someone from Ghana would be videoblogging I would maybe also like them, but they are not …)

PS, Germany will beat Argentina. 2-0. Minimum.

Die Frage nach dem Warum? hab ich mir vor kurzem gar nicht gestellt. Malte von Fooligan versucht das Warum zu erklären, und dem gibt es dann eigentlich nichts mehr hinzuzufügen. Außer vielleicht, dass ich mich bei ein paar deutschen Fans doch unwohl gefühlt hab. Und, dass mir Klemmpatrioten Angst machen. Oder ich die lächerlich finde. Oder beides.

Heute gab’s eine kleine Literatur-Diskussion beim Spreeblick-Podcast. Tanja mag Frank Schätzing (bzw. Der Schwarm) gar nicht, Holgi schon.

Das schizophrene dabei ist, dass ich beide verstehen kann. Die Sprache ist wirklich nicht so toll. Schätzing kann keine Sätze schreiben die im Kopf nagen, keine Dialoge die im Gedächtnis bleiben. Aber er kann einen verdammt spannenden Blockbuster-Film in ein Buch verpacken, und das ganze dann sogar noch besser machen, als so ein Blockbuster je sein könnte. Natürlich könnte man die Grundidee, den menschlichen Egoismus gescheit durchzurütteln literarisch auch besser verpacken, (Der hier, zum Beispiel, hat das viel Egoismuszerstörender gemacht. Aber auch nicht durch literarische Qualität.) aber eben auch weit schlechter. Seine Grundidee ist kreativ und einfach genial. Und wenn schon nicht die Sprache einprägsam ist, dann doch diese Idee. Über die man sogar mal länger nachdenken kann.

Das zweite, was Der Schwarm zu mehr macht als einen Blockbuster in Papierform ist die Passion, mit der sich Schätzing um Nebenschauplätze kümmert. Er wäre (ist?) bestimmt ein wahnsinnig guter Sachbuch-Autor. Man merkt, dass er es mag, so kleine Dinge zu erklären, weil er fasziniert davon ist, und weil er will, dass es der Leser aucht ist. Und das schafft er sogar!

Diese drei Sachen, das Spannende, die Grundidee und die vielen kleinen Erklärungen machen das ganze trotz Hollywood-Scherenschnitt-Charakteren zu einen guten Popcorn-Kino-ähm-Buch. Man muss nur bereit sein sich darauf einzulassen. Anscheinend hat Der Schwarm bei mir da grade einen guten Tag erwischt, den sonst verliere ich eigentlich schnell die Lust wenn mich auch nur was kleines stört. Zumindest bei Büchern.

St. Elsewhere ist wirklich verdammt gut. Wird sich mit It’s Never Been Like That um den Titel bestes Sommeralbum streiten müssen.

Schwarz-Rot-Goldenes ist jetzt, zu Zeiten der WM, kaum zu übersehen. Egal ob nach der WM das alles wieder vorbei ist, oder ob das jetzt so bleibt, egal ob das bei einer WM im eigenen Land eben so ist, oder ob es wirklich ein Zeichen von mehr Nationalstolz (oder wie auch immer man das bezeichnen mag) ist, so richtig wohl fühle ich mich dabei nicht.

Na klar, wenn man es schon nicht mag sollte man wenigstens drüber stehen. Leise lächeln. Kann ich aber nicht.

Sollte ich aber. Das ist die Rückkehr der Normalität. Meint der Köhler. Aha. Wir alle waren also vorher irgendwelche abnormalen Zombies, die sich durch heftiges schwenken von dreifarbigen Stofftüchern und alkoholvernebelten »Deutschland«-Grölen ihre Normalität zurückholen. Welche verdammte Normalität? Wir haben es jedenfalls ohne diese »Normalität« ziemlich gut hinbekommen, das mit dem Staat. Auch ohne heftiges schwenken. Kann diese Skepsis gegenüber allzu viel schwarz-rot-goldenem, gegenüber allzu viel Nationalen nicht genauso deutsche Normalität sein? Kann Skepsis gegenüber allem, was zu Nationalismus führen kann oder nationalistisch ist – weil Nationalismus eben zu vernebeln, zu überdecken versucht – nicht doch besser sein? Und warum brauchen wir überhaupt irgend so ’ne komische Normalität?

Ich will dieses übertriebene, überzogene, dass manche meinen »Normalität« nennen zu müssen auch falsch finden dürfen, ohne als normalitätszerstörender Spielverderber zu gelten.

Bitching about what an douchebag the ref was is and has never been really that cool. That’s lame. Even more so when all the bitching I heard came only from you.

You can be proud. Your team played like blazes with an unbelievable fighting spirit and I was pretty disappointed when you didn’t make the three points in the end (Hey, I like losers. Of course did I root for your team. Plus the Italians were über-arrogant Idiots.) but blaming Larrionda (Locked because of vandalism? Now, that’s pathetic.) is pretty short sighted. And lame (yeah, I already told you that).

Three red cards aren’t that usual – true. But there is no secret rule preventing the ref from sending players off of the pitch after one or two reds. If players act like idiots they get a red card. And all three well deserved it. And: that wasn’t just some harmless tackling. Who told you this bullshit, that something like this is »harmless« tackling and wouldn’t get a red card? Just think about it: there could be more reasons for three red cards than a bad referee – in the end.

So: Stop whining and prepare for USA vs. Ghana. That will be hard enough.

Fast noch am schreiben und schon geht’s los. Wie lang das heute wohl gehen wird? Drei Uhr? Vier Uhr? Irgendsowas. Egal, mein Schlaf ist immer grundsolide, und wer will jetzt schon schlafen? Ole!

Komisch. Immer noch kein Gehupe – was los, schon zu viel gefeiert? Aber Hupen geht doch immer, oder?

Spiekermann über gutes Design, und warum die WM eben das nicht hat.

Konsensdesign kann nicht funktionieren. Entweder kommt ein weichgespültes, charakterloses etwas raus (siehe: WM-Plakat-Abstimmung, als wirklich, ein Sternenhimmel …), oder eben, bei größeren Einfluß von oben wie bei der WM, weil die Vorraussetzungen so zahlreich und komplex sind, etwas einfach nur hässliches. Jedenfalls sofern dem Designer die Fähigkeit fehlt Nein zu sagen.

Schade. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass das durchstylen von sowas großem wie einer WM eine ziemlich geniale Sache sein könnte.
