USA: Bad at playing football, but great at writing about it
Now, that the World Cup finally has arrived (And I like it so far – yes I do! Despite a sudden flag craze here in Germany. Are this the 60 years of pent-up national pride? I’m becoming scared.) it seems as if nobody in any German blog bothers writing about it. I don’t know if I just didn’t find anything interesting so far, but besides some short remarks and stuff also the Kaiser could tell you on the telly, there is nothing. Maybe it’s the media overkill killing all creative writing or something.
Ironically I found some really great stuff from the guys at the other side of the Atlantic, where actually – at least I thought it would be so – no one really cares about football or – as they tend to (falsely!) call it – soccer. Deaspin and The National Anthem Before A Cubs Game (That’s a long name.) deserve to be mentioned. I had much fun with their texts, especially with their sometimes weired and extremely funny US point of view.
And yeah, Fooligan is also great but, well, different. More German. With this often so boring typical German analysis of games. (No, it’s not that bad, Fooligan. Just somehow not so great.)
PS, I know the title is somehow risky, looking at the German team. We could be bad at both football and writing about it. Well, I’m still hoping the best.

[...] One reason why I’m somehow sad that the USA didn’t make it to the knock-out stage may be these guys, US-Fans, who are in Germany (and Holland, and Switzerland) during the World Cup, making their videocast. And I really enjoyed their (lo-tech) videos so far. First of all (and that may explain my fascination for forgein blogs) because of the look at Germany from the outside (highly interesting and entertaining at the same time) and second because of their enthusiasm and optimism (yeah, ok, after the USA got kicked out, they were crushed, but you could really feel their pain, and that was also – great) and a total lack of any arrogance. Wow… am I really getting posted on German blogs? It seems unlikely, somehow…
Thanks for the mention.

Fooligan (if you are asking me, the German football blog) also mentioned you. Twice. (Well, and they are not as bad as I said in this article, actually they’ve gotten pretty great.)
To use one word used so often these days: that’s just deserved.
